Needham —

Two sections of granite from the Route 9 overpass on Chestnut Street still rested on top of a truck, after its driver grazed the bottom of the bridge Tuesday morning jsut before 9 a.m.

Ken Weaver, a truck driver with Calex Trucking, was heading toward Needham on Chestnut Street in Newton, turning onto Route 9, when the top of his truck pulled several pieces of granite on the underside of the bridge onto his truck.

The bridge is estimated to be between 80 and 85 years old.

Police at the scene did not know how much the bridge would cost to repair. Traffic was diverted from the underpass to allow construction workers to remove the debris. Four Newton Police cars and a state trooper were on the scene.

Weaver was uninjured, but he not happy. “As you can see, I’ve had a rough day,” he said.
His day started off poorly, with snow in Connecticut and snarling traffic on the way to
Massachusetts. It was not improving, he said after filling out a Newton Police accident report.

“I’ve had a bad day since I woke up,” Weaver said.
