In recent Papas Elite League play in the Watertown men's basketball league, the Stockmal twins squared off against each other last Thursday inside the Boys and Girls Club. While Kyle Stockmal was second on the Regulators with 16 points, it was brother Cory Stockmal's team, HBC, which ended up on the winning end of an 85-63 victory.
Chris Hurley gave HBC the early lead, hitting 3-of-4 free throws. But it was the Ryan Sherry Show from there on out. Sherry drained 17 first-half points on the Regulators as HBC ended the first half with a 42-30 lead. The deficit at the half could have been larger if not for the Regulators' Max Kerman. Kerman was nearly perfect from the charity strip, hitting 8-of-9 free throws, to go along with his five field goals for 21-first half points.
But coming out of the half, HBC kept the pressure on as Sherry added 15 points, including four straight free throws, for a team-high 33 points. Hurley turned on his perimeter game, hitting three treys to finish second behind his teammate with 12 points. Stockmal, Brian Mahoney and Ryan Wholey also reached double figures in the 22-point victory with 11 points apiece.
The Regulators tried to mount a comeback in the second half as Kyle Stockmal drained 12 of his 16 points, while Kerman stayed hot, adding three more treys for six overall. He finished with a game-high 38 points.
Donohue's Kaos Club was no match for Made Men early last week as they rolled to a 78-68 victory. Lew Finnegan helped Made Men remain undefeated with a game-high 33 points.
It was a seesaw battle. But what ultimately gave Made Men their sixth victory of the season was Finnegan's consistency. In the first 20 minutes, he hit five field goals - two treys - and converted all three free throw attempts for a team-high 15 points. He stayed true to form in the second as he matched his first-half field goals as well as hitting the last six free throws down the stretch.
Corey Tyens followed Finnegan's performance with 13 points, while Mark MacDonald added 11.
Although they were handed their first loss of the season, the Kaos Club had four players in double figures. Mike Zeja led the way with 16, while Matt Curley, J.D. Donohue and Bill Holden followed with 15, 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Brandon Odom led Marcou Jewelers to the 81-54 win over the Boston Bullies with a game-high 20 points. Teammate Frank Wilkens also had 20 points. Chris Picardi had a team-high 16 points for the Bullies. The Boston Bombers had three players reach double digits in their 64-47 victory over the New Landing/Talk of the Town. Davio Dispena led the Bombers with 15 points, while Andre Tongo and Josh Kalendarian were right behind with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Terrel Collins and Anthony Coppola led New Landing with 18 points and 13 points, respectively.
In the O'Brien's Legends League, three weeks into the season the Control Club picked up its third win with a 69-61 victory over the Kaos Club to remain undefeated.
Steve O'Donnell led Control with 28 points, while Mark English and Marcus D'Angelis provided an additional 13 points each. John Griffin had a team-high 22 points for Kaos, while Emilio Coppola and Jim Fitzgerald followed with 13 and 12 points, respectively, as it dropped to 1-2 on the season.
In the second game, Chris DaCosta tied a game-high with 20 points in a 74-57 Johnson Club victory over the Finnegan Club. John Lawn followed DaCosta's lead with 18 points, while Drew Zacek rounded out the double-digit scorers with 14. Joe McGlaughlin led Finnegan Club with 20 points, while Bill Lederman and Peter Karalis followed with 17 and 10 points, respectively.
