Wellesley 7, North 3
Juniors Mike Lopez and Nick Toyias and sophomore Mike Vaglica each scored once for Newton North, but host Wellesley scored the last three goals to turn a 4-3 halftime lead into a 7-3 victory in Bay State Conference boys lacrosse action yesterday afternoon.
Wellesley jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter before the Tigers scored all three of their goals in the second quarter to make it 4-3 at the break. But Wellesley tallied once in the third and twice more in the fourth while holding the Tigers scoreless in the second half.
``We were still in the game at the end of the third quarter,'' said North coach Bussy Adam. ``Wellesley had some excellent players with sharp stick skills but we shot ourselves with some turnovers at some critical times. The effort is always there, the guys work extremely hard, but we just had a few stick-skill mistakes, whether it was an errant pass or a dropped ball, and we we played a little too much defense down the stretch.''
Senior goalie Dan Monahan continued his strong play in net, saving 11 shots.
``He's bailed us out a lot this year with great saves and he played consistently well again (yesterday),'' said Adam of Monahan. ``He was clearing the ball well and starting the transition game.''
North (10-8) visits BSC foe Needham Monday at 4 p.m.
