The Waltham High boys tennis team finished its Greater Boston League schedule in style yesterday with a 4-1 victory over Medford at Brandeis University.

Billy Keating won, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 1 singles and Randy Lopez finished strong with a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-0) triumph at No. 2 singles.

In doubles play, the team of Mike Tortola and Joey Rose went the distance for a 7-6, 2-6, 6-4 victory at No. 1, while Eric Belix and Kevin Tran had an easier time with a 6-0, 7-5 victory at No. 2.

The Hawks (5-9) finish the regular season next week with matches against Latin Academy and Arlington Catholic.

Boys Lacrosse
Waltham 17, Medford 6
The Waltham High boys lacrosse team sewed up a share of the Greater Boston League title with a lopsided victory at Medford.

The Hawks had put themselves in position for a share of the crown with a 16-11 victory over Arlington on Friday after the Ponders had taken the first meeting earlier in the season. Both co-champions are leaving the GBL for the Dual County League at the conclusion of the school year.

Senior Evan Mula led the way for the Hawks with seven goals yesterday.

Waltham (11-5) hosts Lexington today before finishing the regular season with a pair of road games next week.

Baseball
Waltham 5, Somerville 4
After battling back from a 2-0 deficit early, the Waltham baseball team withstood a late Somerville rally for a victory at Trum Field.

Somerville scored twice in the sixth inning to pull within a run and then put the first two runners on in the bottom of the seventh. Junior reliever Roy Desrochers bore down from there with two strikeouts and an induced grounder to shortstop to end the game.

Will Whittemore started his first game of the season and went six strong innings for the win. Junior Ken Whittier was the offensive star of the day with two hits and two RBI.

Waltham (12-5) next hosts Cambridge on Monday.

Girls Lacrosse
Reading 17, Waltham 9
A four-goal effort from senior Brittany Glynn was not enough to lift the Waltham girls lacrosse team past Middlesex League power Reading at Harding Field.

The Hawks were trailing only 7-4 at the half before Reading's offense helped it pull away in the second.

``We played hard,'' said Waltham coach Kristina MacLauglan. ``As good as the defense did - and they did a good job - Reading was very tough.''

Senior Alison Spagnuolo stopped a number of point-blank shots among her 16 saves. Senior Jen Boyd led the defense, while senior Jennifer Gullotti had a strong game in the midfield.

Junior Megan Murphy had two goals, senior Tiana Babigian had a goal and an assist, senior Tori Bergantino had a goal and senior Abby Auld and junior Erica Oliveri had an assist.

Waltham (11-7) plays its final home game of the regular season Tuesday against Medford.

Softball
Somerville 14, Waltham 11
Despite an improved performance, the Waltham softball team couldn't break through for a win against Somerville at Veterans Field yesterday afternoon.

Down 13-4 in the fifth, the Hawks chipped away with five runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh before falling short.

Krista Von Dohlen had her best effort of the season on the mound, according to Waltham coach John Salvo, and Shannon Sullivan had a strong game handling her behind the plate.

Alicia Maillet (2 hits, 3 runs) and Amanda Micco (3 hits, 3 runs) led the offense.

The Hawks travel to Cambridge on Monday.

Girls Tennis
Medford 3, Waltham 2
Junior Olga Dolgopolova's quest for a second straight unbeaten season in team match play continued with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at first singles despite the Waltham girls tennis team's loss at Medford.

Senior Clair Weatherby was Waltham's other winner as she improved to 11-4 with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles.

The Hawks (10-5) travel to Latin Academy tomorrow.
