The Newton North boys tennis team earned yet another 5-0 win yesterday afternoon, sweeping Dedham in a Bay State Conference contest at Newton South High to improve to 16-0.

Mike Spiro won, 6-1, 6-0 at first singles, Dave Lath rolled, 6-0, 6-1 at second singles and Dan Stavins claimed a 6-3, 6-1 victory at third singles. Charlie Lewitt and Ben Cassidy won, 6-0, 6-2 at first doubles, while Ian Gallogly and Ethan Tseng bageled their opponents in a 6-0, 6-0 win at second doubles.

The Tigers look for their 17th win tomorrow at 3:45 p.m. when they host BSC rival Weymouth.

Boys Volleyball
North 3, Braintree 1

With senior Josh Dulberg sitting out the game due to injury, senior Keenan Grooms stepped up with eight kills against one error and a .350 kill percentage to lead the Newton North boys volleyball team to a 3-1 win over visiting Braintree in Bay State Conference action yesterday.

Outside hitter Chris McCann, filling in at Dulberg's spot, added six kills in the 25-18, 25-15, 26-28, 25-23 win.

McCann was also among the five Tigers chosen as BSC First-Team All-Stars, joining Dulberg, Noah Goldberg, Konst Dimov and Sun-Jae Song.

Now 11-6, North hosts Needham in its season finale tomorrow at 4 p.m.

Softball
Dedham 11, North 1

Leanne Precopio had a nice day at the plate, blasting a second-inning home run for the Newton North softball team's only run to go along with a double in the fourth, but it wasn't nearly enough in an 11-1 Bay State Conference loss to host Dedham.

Precopio's round-tripper sailed over the left fielder's head. Kate Pelligrini, Tiffany Hamann, Rae Copan, Rebecca Fleming and Rachel Magid each went 1-for-3 as the Tigers fell to 8-8.

North must win two of its last four games to reach the postseason beginning tomorrow at Weymouth (3:45 p.m.).

The Tigers claimed a 5-0 victory over the Wildcats earlier this season.
