The Trinity Catholic boys soccer team didn't quite get the victory it was looking for in yesterday's regular-season finale at Matignon.
But the Falcons did get the tie they needed as the 2-2 deadlock clinched a second-place tie in the Catholic Central League Small and earned them an automatic bid in the state tournament.
Trinity finished the regular season at 7-8-1 overall and 6-3-1 in the CCL Small after winning just two games last season. The Falcons went 2-0-1 over their last three games to make the tourney cut.
The tournament seedings will be announced Thursday.
The Falcons scored first when senior midfielder Nicola Scarrone tallied on an assist from junior forward Justin Kang. The Falcons took a 2-0 lead early in the second half when Kang hit a beautiful pass to senior forward Duo Kwon, who buried the chance.
The Warriors battled back and scored two unanswered goals for the tie.
``Our defense and goalkeeper played fantastic,'' said TC coach Troy Turick. ``Senior stopper and captain Dave Oreste held the leading goal scorer in the league without a point all day.''
Sophomore fullback Brett O'Keefe and sophomore sweeper Jay O'Neill played tough defense, thwarting Matignon's skilled and aggressive attack. Sophomore goalie Harry Regis had some great saves, including a huge breakaway save in the first half.
