Newton South's Celia Kaufer's goal from Martha Schnee gave the Lions a 1-0 lead early, but Newton North rallied for three unanswered goals in a non-league season finale for both teams.
Lauren Smith, Amalie Brown and Sarah Perlo scored for the Tigers, who ended a tough season on a very bright note, with the 3-1 victory, after they were knocked from the state tourney in the season finale against the Lions last year.
``I give a lot of credit to North,'' said South coach Doug McCarthy. ``They had to sit and wait a whole year since we beat them last year and you could tell they were highly motivated today. They played well.''
Gann 1, Waring 0 (OT)
Junior Dena Ofengeim scored the winning goal off senior Nancy Epstein's corner kick with three minutes left in the second overtime to lift the Gann Academy girls soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Cambridge School of Weston in Independent Girls Conference playoff action yesterday in Waltham.
Gann controlled the time of possession and held a big edge in shots on goal in the game. Tali Marcus, Rebekah Galinsky, Sarah Waxman and Ilana Wasserman all played strong defensively, limiting CSW to no quality scoring threats.
Gann travels to Medfield to play the Montrose School in the IGC semifinals tomorrow.
Chelmsford 1, Waltham 0
Despite plenty of second-half possession the Waltham High girls soccer team couldn't crack the Chelmsford net in its season finale at Leary Field.
Junior Stephanie Oliveri played a great game in the midfield and seniors Olivia Creonte and Alina Bahlavouni pressed the action up front for the Hawks.
``We had a lot of junior varsity girls who had the opportunity to play varsity this year,'' said Waltham coach James Martinez. ``They have shown the ability to play at that level, so that bodes well for next year. With all of the girls we have graduating, there will be a lot of opportunity.''
