Starting pitcher Sean Mullaney allowed only two hits - none after the second inning - as the Newton Post 440 American Legion baseball team rolled to an 8-1 victory at Medford last night.
Post 440 improved to 7-5-1 with its second straight victory. It faces a very important game in its bid for one of the four Zone 5 playoff spots tonight when it hosts Lowell at Albemarle Park (6 p.m.).
Newton struck for six runs in the fourth inning and two more in the seventh last night.
In the fourth, Waltham's Chaz Agrillo led off with a double and scored on a single from Newton South's Sam Forman. Newton added runs on a two-run double from Waltham's Robbie MacDonald and an RBI single from Newton North's Leighton Culici.
In the sixth, MacDonald reached on an error with two outs and walks to Culici and Agrillo loaded the bases before Waltham's Dylan Carnes plated two runs with a double.
After tonight's game, Newton will host North Chelmsford in a make-up game Friday night at Newton Upper Falls Field. It then hosts undefeated Sudbury Saturday at Albemarle at 5 p.m.

Waltham's Colon leads Metro
Waltham High's Ivan Colon had two hits, including an RBI double, as the Metro squad bested Central, 9-6, in Bay State Games baseball action yesterday at Bentley University.
Colon also scored twice as Metro improved to 3-1 in pool play.

McClary 9, Global 2
McClary Enterprises rebounded from a loss to Global Thrift on Monday night with a 9-2 victory last night at Jake Dennis Field.
Ian Lyons won his second game of the year, pitching seven strong innings, giving up only six hits and striking out seven. Lyons helped his cause with three hits, including a double, and scored three runs. Dan Stack, Jason Stack and Derek Turmel each drove in single runs, while Jack Murphy contributed two RBI.
Mike Penzo and Matt Dickey each had two hits for Global Thrift.
On Monday, Global Thrift earned its first win of the season in a pitcher's duel over McClary.
Seth Rosenbloom pitched a three-hit, complete-game gem for Global with 11 strikeouts and no walks. Smart baserunning by Penzo (3 stolen bases) and timely hitting by Dickey accounted for Global's two runs, backed by solid defense from Peter Blackburn and Connor Browne.
Drew Walsh also pitched a fine game for McClary, giving up only five hits with six strikeouts.
