A six-run first inning set the stage for Cathedral's 8-3 victory over the Trinity Catholic baseball team yesterday at Cabot Park.

``We tried to dig out of it a couple of times,'' said TC coach Craig Genualdo. ``We loaded the bases, and scored a couple of runs. But they threw too many strikes and we didn't hit the ball.''

Junior Elio Espino had a two-run double and sophomore Sean Moccia had an excellent game in the field at shortstop for the Falcons.

The Falcons also got a strong emotional effort from seniors Steven Burckardt and Mike Rizzo.

Trinity (4-9, 4-6 Catholic Central League) must win its five remaining games to make the state tournament starting with tomorrow's contest against North Cambridge Catholic.

A 12-run fourth inning lifted the Mt. St. Joseph's softball team past Trinity Catholic in a Catholic Central League contest.

Junior Molly Stone pitched the full game and threw hard, with a lot of strikes, despite the MSJA offense. Junior Jenn Smallwood had a double and freshman Nicole Civitarese had a beautiful two-out, full-count single that scored two runs.

TC (6-6, 4-4 CCL) faces Lowell Catholic today.
