Boys Soccer
Melrose 2, Watertown 1
Junior Eric Yakuze scored a first-half goal from senior Robert Janikian for the Watertown boys soccer team, but Melrose struck back with two second-half goals in a 2-1 Middlesex League opener.
Melrose took the lead with seven minutes left in the game. Watertown coach Kaz Kuechkarian Jr. called timeout, and the Raiders came out pressing in the late-day heat, but couldn't get the equalizer.
``It was hot and they didn't stop playing strong,'' Keuchkarian said. ``After the game, I told them that if they play this kind of game all season, and keep this type of press on the opponent, we'll have a good year.''
Watertown tries to get its first victory at Burlington tomorrow morning.
