WALTHAM —

The driver of a Newton Boys & Girls Club passenger van struck and injured a pedestrian on Main Street yesterday afternoon, said police.

A 73-year-old Waltham woman was taken to Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge with non-life-threatening injuries after a Chevy 12-passenger van hit her while driving in reverse.

Just after 4 p.m., the woman was trying to cross from the western side of Main Street near the post office, Officer Stephen Clarke said.

The woman, said Clarke, was in a crosswalk.

The van struck the woman after she took a few steps into the road. The passenger van was backing up in order to pull out into traffic.

The van, used by the Boys & Girls Club of Newton, was full of children between the ages of 7 and 11.

The woman fell to ground and suffered hip injuries, said Clarke.

Executive Director of the Newton-based Boys & Girls Club David Sellers said the driver, who is an employee of the organization, could face disciplinary actions.

"I don't have total information at this time," said Sellers. "Obviously our concerns are for (the pedestrian) and for her health at this point in time. ... At this point the driver is upset and concerned."

The driver, a 35-year-old Newton woman, told police she thought the pedestrian had made her way past the van when she reversed, said Clarke.

She was cited for improper care when backing, said Clarke.
