A 20-year-old Waltham man has been ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation after police say he stabbed a homeless man on Moody Street Friday night.
Thomas Vasile was arraigned yesterday morning in Waltham District Court on charges of assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
According to court documents, Vasile turned himself in after stabbing 36-year-old Richard Schroter twice outside the Tiki House stemming from an argument earlier in the day.
Vasile told police that Schroter insulted him and his mother while the two waited outside Labor Ready, where they both went to look for work on Friday morning.
Prior to the incident, the two men knew each other and Schroter had previously lived with Vasile until he was kicked out by his mother, court documents say.
Schroter sustained serious injuries in the attack, which occurred around 6 p.m. He was taken to Boston Medical Center, where he underwent emergency surgery. Court documents and police reports detail the stab wounds, which were on Schroter's left rear shoulder and the back of his head.
Information regarding Schroter's condition could not be obtained as of press time.
Police said Vasile, of 44 Chester Ave., Apt. 1, turned himself in at the station headquarters later that day.
A knife, believed to be used during the attack, was found under a parked car just yards away from the Tiki Bar entrance. According to statements from witnesses and Vasile, Schroter and Vasile exchanged heated words before the attack.
The State Police Crime Lab went to the call. Clothing from both will be tested for blood, police reports say. Police also recovered a surveillance tape from Gordon's Liquor which shows Vasile running south on Moody Street after the attack.
Judge Tobin Harvey ordered Vasile to a Bridgewater facility for 20 days after which he will return to court.
He is due back in court on June 19 for a pretrial hearing.
