On behalf of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life events of Newton-Brookline and Watertown, I would like to thank the many local residents for their generosity and support. This year, 59 teams participated in the two Relay events, and cumulatively raised more than $167,000 for the American Cancer Society's programs of research, education, advocacy, and patient services. This outstanding support proves that the people of Newton, Brookline, Watertown, and surrounding communities are truly committed to the fight against cancer.

I want to applaud the 113 cancer survivors who participated in the opening laps and survivor receptions at these events. They are the reason we continue the fight, because each year there can be more and more people living full lives following a diagnosis of cancer.

A special thanks to the many Relay For Life volunteers who worked to make these events a success. The Relay For Life committees did an outstanding job of putting the events together. Relay committee members from the two local Relays included Judy Spar, Heather Wax, Mei Wu, Mark Springer, Deb Gowins, Mike Dion, Susan Paley, Elaine Clement, Doreen Dawson, Steve Aylward, Tom McManus, Laura Martin, Mary Kelly, Riche Kelly, Karen Vailliant, Sandy Cristello, Ed Sugrue, Ernie Berardinelli, Deb Boyajian, Barbara Nash, Sara Walsh, Marie Tsacogianis, Joyce Munger, Rick Munger, Maura Emery, Cheryl Mazzeo, and Sarah Tsacogianis.

We also appreciate the generosity of this year's corporate sponsors including Newton-Wellesley Hospital, The Village Bank, Hotel Indigo, Ike's Barbecue, Starbucks, JDJ Resources, Watertown Savings Bank, Rotary Club of Watertown, and Loughran & Corbett Attorneys. We would also like to give a very special thank you to all of the generous sponsors who donated a variety of items and food to our Relay events.

Again, thank you for supporting the American Cancer Society, and remember, it's not too late to turn in any last minute funds raised or too early to become involved in Relay For Life for next year.

ERIK LANGHOFF, American Cancer Society, Area Director of Development
