Waltham is a multi-generational community, a multi-ethnic community, and a multi-cultural community. The selection of a new superintendent of schools will have an effect on every resident of the city. It is imperative that we have a wide ranging of qualified candidates from which to make the selection. The Superintendent Search Committee has asked members of the community to help establish criteria for the selection process.

The League of Women Voters of Waltham believes that a superintendent must:

*Demonstrate a continuing commitment to education by having an advanced degree;

*Have substantial classroom experience;

*Have a clear grasp of the financial realities of a public school system;

*Understand the importance of communication in this diverse community.

Waltham has a great tradition of providing musical, athletic, scientific, intellectual, and artistic opportunities to our students at little or no cost. The League of Women Voters expects that the individual selected will strongly support the continuation of these opportunities, establish realistic academic goals, and allow our students and community to flourish.

In tight economic times hard decisions must be made. We believe that sharing the process by which concerns are addressed will enhance the community's awareness and let each resident know how decisions are made.

Vice president,
