A Waltham man was released on $1,000 cash bail after being arraigned at Concord District Court on charges that he allegedly beat and choked his pregnant girlfriend, stole her car and left her stranded outside the Concord Free Public Library.
At 12:39 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, officers responded to a 911 call from a Carlisle woman reporting her boyfriend, later identified as 21-year-old Waltham resident Hector Luis Marrero, assaulted her while forcing her to drive to several locations and choked her before leaving her at the library on Main Street.
Marrero is scheduled to be back at Concord District Court on Dec. 15 for a pre-trial hearing.
The woman did not believe her boyfriend had weapons on him, but told police Marrero was a narcotics user and there could be syringes in the vehicle, according to the police report.
Concord Deputy Police Chief Barry Neal said Concord Officer Robert Murray located the vehicle on Thoreau Street headed toward Walden Street at a high rate of speed, but Marrero allegedly fled on foot into the Hapgood Write Forest after Murray pulled over the vehicle near the woods.
Police set up a containment perimeter, and Officer Chuck DiRenzo and Lincoln Police Lt. Kevin Kennedy eventually found Marrero in the woods, Neal said.
"Officer DiRenzo was using night vision goggles and was able to located him behind a rock or a log," Neal said. "After that, he was apprehended easily, without incident. It was good work by the officers."
Concord Police charged Marrero with assault with a dangerous weapon, simple assault and battery, threatening to commit a crime, wanton destruction of property worth more than $250, use of a motor vehicle without authority, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, failing to stop for police and speeding.
