A five-car pileup on Rte. 128 south early Saturday sent three people to area hospitals.
One of those hurt faces criminal charges stemming from the crash, which happened just after midnight, south of Winter Street.
Michael Gallant, 51, of Somerville, crashed his 1999 Toyota Camry into the left guardrail, spinning the car around and triggering a chain of crashes, said state police Lt. Matthew Murray.
Gallant was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston with serious injuries. A hospital spokesman last night said Gallant was in intensive care.
He faces charges of driving with a suspended license, a second offense, and driving without proper authority, said state police Sgt. David Mahan.
State police are investigating whether alcohol played a factor in the accident. That investigation is ongoing.
Vicki Pardallis, 39, of Medford, was driving a 2003 Ford Crown Victoria and was driven to Newton-Wellesley Hospital with minor injuries.
Cecilia Cohen, 52, of Randolph, was driving a 2004 Nissan Maxima. She went to the same hospital with minor injuries.
The drivers of two other vehicles, a 2005 Ford Focus and a 1993 Toyota Corolla, were unhurt, said Mahan.
The crash shut three lanes down on Rte. 128 for almost three hours early Saturday.
