The Gore Place Society has honored Mayor Jeannette McCarthy for her support of historic preservation efforts in the city.

Deborah Gates, president of the society's board of directors, presented McCarthy with the inaugural Christopher Gore Preservation Award on Wednesday during the group's annual holiday party.

Thom Roach, programming director for Gore Place, said the mayor was chosen for the word because of her "unflagging support for local historical institutions" such as Historic Waltham Inc. as well as Gore Place.

Roach said some the mayor's efforts in that realm include letting students use the city's trolley so they could visit Gore Place, hosting Concerts on the Common and stepping in to help with events like Historic Waltham Days.

"I'm very pleased to help all of the local historic groups preserve Waltham's treasures," McCarthy said. "It's a collaborative effort."

The award is named after the former Massachusetts governor who built the mansion in 1806.

In the past few years, the society has been working to renovate the mansion, including performing architectural and archaeological surveys, installing a modern heating system, new gutters and downspouts, roof and chimney repairs and restoring 96 windows. In addition, the society is looking to install a modern fire suppression system at the estate.
