Police said they arrested a Waltham man after he stole about $2,500 over two weeks from cash registers at Walmart.
Store security had been monitoring cashier Jose Cirillo, 21, of 22 Adams St., for a couple weeks because they suspected he had been taking money from the cash drawer, police spokesman Lt. Paul Shastany said.
Walmart's loss-prevention department recorded the serial numbers of the bills they believed Cirillo might take in the hopes of catching him in the act, Shastany said.
"They watched him, and he took two $100 bills with the serial numbers recorded," Shastany said. "After they observed him take the money, they detained him and the bills were on him."
Cirillo did not tell security how he stole the money, Shastany said.
"He said the reason for the thefts was because of debt and rent," he said.
Cirillo was charged with five counts of larceny from a depository, two counts of larceny worth more than $250 and three counts of larceny worth less than $250.
