Three incumbent ward councilors retained their seats, while in Ward 1 there will be a new face on the council.

In a battle of political newcomers, Daniel Romard yesterday defeated Gloria Champion, 747 to 537, to win the Ward 1 council seat.

Romard credited his victory to "hard work."

"It's attributed to getting out to the voters, meeting them, learning their concerns and what affects them," Romard said. "I want to thank the voters of Ward 1."

Champion could not be reached for comment last night.

After nearly 14 years on the council, incumbent Ward 1 Councilor Robert Kelly did not run for re-election.

In Ward 7, incumbent Joe Giordano received 432 votes to fend off a challenge from Paul Umbrello, who tallied 308 votes.

In Ward 8, incumbent Stephen Rourke retained his seat, defeating Albert Bakalis, 352 to 149.

Meanwhile, in Ward 9, incumbent Robert Logan defeated challenger Andrew Driscoll with a vote of 244 to 104.

"I like to think people are satisfied with the job I'm doing," Logan said,

Running uncontested for re-election were Ward 2 Councilor Ed Tarallo, Ward 3 Councilor George A. Darcy III, Ward 4 Councilor Thomas Curtin, Ward 5 Councilor Gary Marchese, and Ward 6 Councilor Robert Waddick.
