Annual exhibition
Waltham Stamp Club's annual exhibition returns for the 12th year to Minuteman High School, 758 Marrett Road (Rte. 2A), Lexington, on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. There will be 53 tables of stamps, covers and supplies offered by dealers. A number of the dealers will bring certified investment grade material to the show. The U.S. Postal Service will also have a booth. Auction bidding will begin Sunday, Oct. 19, at 1 p.m. Catalogs for the HJW Daughtery auction are available at P.O. Annual Meeting

Total healing workshop

BOY SCOUT TROOP
Popcorn fundraiser
Waltham Boy Scout Troop 250 is holding its annual popcorn fundraiser to raise money for the troop. The popcorn comes in several flavors including cheese, caramel, chocolate, and caramel light, all are packaged in large decorative tins that are perfect for gift giving and make wonderful family or hostess gifts. The pop-it-yourself popcorn comes in butter, light, kettle corn and variety pack of each flavor. This program also offers the opportunity to send popcorn to our troops. HARVEST FAIR
Oct. 18-19
One of the oldest on-going celebrations of the fall season, Newton's annual Harvest Fair, takes place Saturday, Oct. 18, and Sunday, Oct. 19, from 11 to 5 p.m., on Newton Centre Green, Centre Street. On Saturday, Oct. 18, there is a gala sidewalk sale featuring great discounts, special promotions and a raffle with fabulous prizes. Merchants have very generously donated valuable coupons for services and products knowing that the proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Newton Pride Committee. On Sunday Oct. 19, Harvest Fair expands with kiddie rides, a huge handmade and international craft show, free pumpkin decorating, face painting, sidewalk art and sand art, live entertainment, and educational and environmental organizations' information booths. 'The Band Wagon'
Film Critic Dan Kimmel will present "The Band Wagon" at EPOCH Assisted Living at Boylston Place, 615 Heath St., on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m. "The Band Wagon" is a 1953 musical comedy starring Fred Astaire as a washed-up movie star who his friends convince to accept a role in their Broadway show. Open House
The West Suburban YMCA will host its Open House Week, Sunday, Oct. 19, through Sunday, Oct. 26. Members, participants, and guests are all invited to experience the YMCA's events, programs, and classes. Members of the community are invited to stop in and receive a one-day guest pass to all of the YMCA's facilities including use of the state of the art fitness center, 10,000 square-foot gymnasium, indoor track, two heated pools, and New Balance Track & field. The YMCA will feature its programs and departments by offering free group exercise classes throughout the week, free open climb time on the YMCA's Climbing Complex, extended family swim hours, SNAG Golf sessions, and much more. Lifeguard training
The West Suburban YMCA will offer a three-day Red Cross Lifeguard Training course and certification Sunday, Oct. 19, 26, and Nov. 2, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. To successfully complete this course, participants will learn the necessary skills needed to become a certified lifeguard, including First Aid, CPR for the professional rescuer, and AED. Participants must be at least 15 years of age, can swim 300 yards of a combination of the front crawl and breaststroke, have the ability to retrieve a 10 pound brick from the bottom of the pool, and swim 20 yards keeping the brick above water. Jazz concert
Jazz duo Paul Speidel, of Newton, and Steve Conahan, present a Blue Shades of Jazz set featuring well-known standards from the Great American Songbook at the Newton Free Library, 330 Homer St., on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. The concert will place an emphasis on numbers exemplifying how the Blues and Jazz have evolved side-by-side and how the styles have continued to influence each other throughout their development. SHILLELAGH SHUFFLE
Paddy's Road Race
Paddy's Road Race, The Shillelagh Shuffle, will take place Sunday, Oct. 19, beginning at 11:30 a.m. at Paddy's, 95 Elm St. Entry fee is $20, $25 race day. The post party at Paddy's includes food, beverages, music, raffle prizes and awards. The three-mile race has all the touches of Ireland, including bagpipes, Irish step dancers and shillelaghs. This West Newton tradition supports Newton Special Athletes program, one of the largest community-based therapeutic recreation programs for people with disabilities in New England. New baby group
WarmLines New Babies/New Parents group begins Monday, Oct. 20, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at 225 Nevada St., for first-time parents and infants up to 6 months old. Ryan Walker Exhibit
Mount Ida College Gallery, Carlson Hall, 777 Dedham St., presents "Ryan Walker: The Recycler," Oct. 21-Dec. 7. Walker creates installations, sculptures and structures in space using discarded objects. He explores, rethinks and transforms the object's inherent purpose by combining unrelated parts to make a totally new unusable form. Objects are created for a purpose. Poetry series
The Newton Free Library's poetry series continues Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m., with poets Denise Bergman, series director Doug Holder and Kathleen Aguero. Bergman's poetry reflects her longtime devotion to urban living and to Cambridge in particular. Holder is the founder of the Ibbetson Street Press. His latest collection is "The Man in the Booth in the Midtown Tunnel." Aguero has written several poetry books, most recently, "Daughter Of." Barney Frank
U.S. Rep. Barney Frank, D-4th, will present a keynote address to an audience of more than 100 businessmen at this month's Government Affairs and Lawyer's Council Forum hosted by the Newton-Needham Chamber of Commerce. The event is Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 7:30 a.m., Mount Ida College's Carlson Hall, 777 Dedham St. Rep. Frank is one of the key national figures working to resolve our nation's financial instability. YMCA
After-school programs
The YMCA's middle school after-school program provides students with a supervised, active, and educational environment. The Youth Center offers an array of activities including sports, swimming, board games, music, arts and crafts, an air hockey and ping-pong table, and much more. Students also have the opportunity to use a quiet and staffed homework room. Kids' Night Out is a supervised, safe, and fun Friday night drop-in program for students ages 6-13. Held from 6 to 10 p.m., this program gives students the opportunity to enjoy dinner, art projects, basketball, racquetball, and use of the pool and gymnasium. High school and middle school students can showcase their musical talents with the YMCA's Band Nights on Fridays, 6 to 10 p.m. Students can learn how to practice and perform for concerts in front of an audience. DAVID LAFLEUR
Singing at library
Winner of the 2007 Pacific Songwriting Competition, David LaFleur, will perform at Newton Free Library, 330 Homer St., Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.m. Engaging his audiences with humor and wit, LaFleur discusses the instruments he plays as well as the origins of the traditional folk songs, spirituals, blues and Appalachian ditties he performs.
