WALTHAM COUNCIL ON AGING, July events
July events at the Waltham Council on Aging, W.F. Stanley Senior Center, 488 Main St.; hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Council on Aging Office will be closed on Friday, July 3, in observance of Independence Day. Call 781-899-7228 to register for any of the programs listed below. All events at the Center, unless otherwise noted.

New summer hours
Starting July 1, the Senior Center will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday-Thursday, and 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Friday. The senior center will reinstate regular hours beginning Sept. 14.

Taxi vouchers
The discount taxi voucher program resumes July 1. Vouchers are available to Waltham residents age 60+. First-time buyers must provide proof of age and make purchase in person at the senior center. The cost is $5 for a book of $10 voucher, $2.50 for SSI recipients. You may purchase four books for the month of July. To purchase by mail, send a check made payable to the City of Waltham with a self addressed stamped envelope (for 4 books you need 2-44 cent stamps) to the Council on Aging, 488 Main St., Waltham, MA 02452.
The new vouchers will expire June 30, 2010. We can not buy back any unused vouchers and we are not responsible for lost or misplaced vouchers. Taxi drivers appreciate cash tips and the vouchers are not valid for rides to the airport.

Discussions
Long Term Care: Regulations and Resident Rights, is Monday, July 13, 1 p.m. with attorney Frank Lewenberg from the Mass. Bar Association. He will discuss nursing home care, assisted living, continuing care retirement communities and other important elder programs.
Staying Ahead of Congestive Heart Failure, on Monday, July 20, 1 p.m., will outline contributing factors, indicators and preventative tips for those with CHF. Being aware of the causes and symptoms is a crucial first step in combating the disease. Presented by Karen Breehey from the Visiting Nurse and Community Health, Inc. of Arlington.
Possibilities in Sight, on Thursday, July 23, 1 p.m., is designed to offer solutions for people with vision loss. Topics to be discussed include eye condition symptoms, new technologies for the visually impaired, solutions for daily living such as cooking, shopping and reading personal mail. Presented by Amy Halloran, low vision specialist from Perkins School for the Blind.
Assertiveness training Monday, July 27, 1 p.m., is a 90-minute program that trains seniors on the positive approach for effective communication with friends, relatives, physicians and health care professionals, and as a consumer. Handouts and refreshments will be provided. Presented by Beth I. Gandelman, M.S. from Comfort Keepers.
Attorney Tim Loff, Elder Law specialist, and Stephen Pepe from Met Life present information and important updates on reverse mortgages Tuesday, July 28, 1 p.m.

Ice cream social
Wayne F. Brasco Sr. and family is sponsoring an ice cream social Friday, July 16, 1 p.m., with entertainment by John Penny and Steve Stains. Free, but registration required. Shuttle at 12:30 p.m.

Red Sox
Come watch the Boston Red Sox take on the Oakland Athletics on Thursday, July 30, 1:35 p.m., on the 46-inch high definition TV, and celebrate the return of the Fenway Frank (hot dogs and peanuts will be served).

Latino Day
Celebrate Latino culture, food and music Thursday, Aug. 6, 12:30 p.m. Lunch will feature barbeque chicken, rice and beans and flan for dessert. Entertainment will be provided by Jose Reyes. This cost is $6.

Spirit of Boston cruise
The Spirit of Boston 2-hour luncheon cruise, on Wednesday, Aug. 19, includes a buffet, dessert, coffee, tea and iced tea. The cruise also offers interactive entertainment and a DJ. The cost is $37, due upon reservation beginning July 7. The bus departs from the Sacred Heart Church parking lot at 10:15 a.m. and returns around 3 p.m.

Thursday, July 2, 1 p.m., ``The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.'' Brad Pitt is a man born in New Orleans just after World War I who is already in his eighties and lives his life aging in reverse.
Thursday, July 9, 2:30 p.m., ``Revolutionary Road.'' Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio are a young couple whose once idealistic relationship steadily deteriorates into a ceaseless cycle of jealousy and constant bickering.
Thursday, July 23, 2:30 p.m., ``Bride Wars.'' A clerical error tests the lifelong friendship of two brides-to-be by scheduling their weddings on the same date. in this romantic comedy starring Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway. Filmed in Boston.
Thursday, July 30, 1 p.m., ``The Duchess.'' This period drama starring Kiera Knightly and Ralph Fiennes documents the romantic entanglements of Georgiana Cavendish, a beautiful woman who becomes a celebrity of British high society when she marries the Duke of Devonshire.

Broken hip
Researchers from Boston University, Partners Healthcare and the MGH Institute of Health Professions are currently conducting a research study to find out if an exercise program that people can do in their home can help to improve their function after a hip fracture.
