October events at the Waltham Council on Aging, W.F. Stanley Senior Center, 488 Main St.; hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Closed Monday, Oct. 13, in observance of Columbus Day. Call 781-899-7228 to register for any of the programs listed below. All events at the Center, unless otherwise noted.

Trips
A narrated bus tour foliage trip of the Quabbin Reservoir, followed by lunch at the Salem Cross Inn and a visit to the Oakwood Farm Christmas Barn, is Oct. 22. Two lunch choices. The cost is $37, due upon reservation beginning Wednesday, Oct. 8. The bus will depart from the Sacred Heart Church parking lot at 9 a.m. and returns around 4:30 p.m. One ticket per person.
There are two trips for lunch at Longfellow's Wayside Inn: Wednesday, Nov. 5, or Monday, Nov. 10. Two lunch choices. Time to shop at the Country Store. Cost is $20, due upon reservation beginning Wednesday, Oct. 8. The bus will depart from the Sacred Heart Church parking lot at 11:15 a.m. and return around 3:30 p.m. One ticket per person.

Concert
Wilson Tamale will perform Monday, Oct. 6, 1 to 2 p.m. Registration required Light refreshments will be served.

Halloween party
Celebrate Halloween on Friday, Oct. 31 with David Hall's Magic Show at 12:30 p.m., followed by the movie ``The Others'' at 1:30. Light refreshments will be served. Registration is required.

Oktoberfest
Enjoy a festive German Oompah band, knockwurst, hot dogs, sauerkraut and German chocolate cake Friday, Oct. 10, noon, in the parking lot. In case of rain, it will be moved inside. Use the shuttle from the Sacred Heart Church parking lot at 11:30 p.m. as the center lot will be closed. Cost is $5, payable upon reservation .

Autumn tea
Wear your favorite hat and bring your favorite tea cup to the annual Autumn Tea on Friday, Nov. 7, 1 p.m. Lunch will be dainty sandwiches, salads and dessert. Entertainment will be provided by Bill Walsh. Cost is $2, payable upon reservation.

Health
Walgreen's will be administering flu shots at the senior center on Friday, Oct. 3, and Monday, Nov. 3, both 1 to 4 p.m., by appointment only. Call 781-899-7228 or 781-314-3499 for appointment.
Blood Pressure and Strokes, presented by Mount Auburn Hospital, is Monday, Oct. 27, 1 p.m. Bring your questions. Registration is required.
Podiatry: Dr. Tuler will be at the Senior Center on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., for routine visits such as nail and callous care. Call to make appointment.
Blood pressure screenings: Wednesdays, Oct. 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, 9 a.m. Also: Thursday, Oct. 9, 2 p.m., Grove St. Housing; Tuesday, Oct. 14, 10 a.m., 101 Prospect St. No longer offered at Pine Street Housing.
Glucose screening offered Thursday, Oct. 2, 1 p.m.

MBTA
The MBTA staff will be at the senior center Friday, Oct. 10, noon to 4 p.m., to replace old IDs and take new applications (65+ with proof of age). Seniors from surrounding communities are welcome. A shuttle will be available from the Sacred Heart Church parking lot every half hour, 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. because the parking lot will be closed.

Fuel assistance
Any person who received fuel assistance last year will receive the recertification application by mail. These applications should be filled out and mailed in as soon as possible. If you need assistance completing the forms, are 60+ and would like to apply as a new applicant, or need to know the income guidelines, call Maureen at 781-314-3301.

Medicare Part D options
Medicare open enrollment is Nov. 15-Dec. 31. Dorene Nemeth, assistant director of the Metro West Shine Program will be on hand Monday, Oct. 20, 1 p.m., to discuss the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D Plans) and Medicare Advantage Plans. Registration is required.

Program updates
An Afternoon with Books resumes Wednesday, Oct. 1, 3 p.m. Sit around the fireplace at the senior center with library staff to talk about new and interesting books. Please let us know if you plan to attend.
A 10-week Line Dance class runs Oct. 2-Dec. 11 (no class Nov. 27). The advanced group will meet from 2:15 - 3:15 and beginners from 3:15 - 4:15 PM. Cost is $30, $40 for non-residents, payable on the first day.
Beyond Balance and Matter of Balance classes begin Thursday, Oct. 16. Classes focus on exercise with one hour of strengthening movement. Cost is $40, payable on the first day.
SHINE appointments offered on Tuesday & Thursday mornings, and Tuesday and Friday afternoons.
You may purchase four books of Taxi Vouchers for October.
The 2008 Complimentary Senior Citizen Athletic Pass is available at the senior center. This ticket entitles the bearer to all Waltham High School football, basketball, and hockey home games.

Movies
Friday, Oct. 3, 1 p.m., ``Dan in Real Life'' A romantic comedy about an advice columnist and widowed father of three who finds a new love interest who happens to be his brother's girlfriend.
Friday, Oct. 17, 1 p.m., ``Becoming Jane'' A portrait of pre-fame Jane Austen and her romance with a young Irishman.
Friday, Oct. 24, 1 p.m., ``Wait Until Dark'' The story of a blind woman terrorized by a criminal who's after a stash of drugs planted in her apartment without her knowledge.
Friday, Oct. 31, 1:30 p.m., ``The Others'' Thriller about a mother who protects her sun-sensitive children in a house that seems haunted.
