The fifth and hopefully final phase of improvements at Nipper Maher Park is being planned, said Sandra Tomasello, the city's recreation director.

To that end, the recreation and planning departments are letting residents have their say on park improvements.

A public meeting will be held rain or shine at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the park in the green space between the two Little League baseball fields.

Tomasello said there is about $200,000 in federal Community Development Block Grant funding available to the city to make the upgrades to the park, which is on Dartmouth Street, off South Street.

Already slated for the final phase of capital improvements are a new baseball field, new fencing along the Bedford Street side of the park, and a walking trail, among other upgrades.

"There may be some other things expressed at this community input meeting," Tomasello said.

The new baseball diamond could be a T-ball field. Tomasello said her department would get feedback from the Waltham Little Nippers Baseball League regarding the dimensions of the field.

While this is set to be the final phase of work at the park, Tomasello said there could be more upgrades down the road.

Once the work is done at Nipper Maher, focus can shift to improvements at other parks, she said.

"We're hoping this kind of ties up the loose ends, so to speak," Tomasello said.

Those who cannot attend Wednesday's meeting can submit comments in writing to the Recreation Department. All comments must be received by Friday, Aug. 21.
