Authorities are still searching for the second suspect in an armed robbery at the Bank of America at Moody and Ash streets Monday afternoon, said Dave Procopio, spokesman for the Massachusetts State Police.
Two masked men robbed the bank at 625 Moody St. at gunpoint around 12:26 p.m. and fled with an undisclosed amount of money, said Waltham Police Detective Sgt. Tim King.
By 2 p.m., Lexington Police had nabbed one suspect, Benjamin Michaud, 32, a homeless man whose last known hometown was Saugus. Waltham Police charged him with armed robbery while masked.
Police said the second suspect apparently stole a red 2007 Volvo XC90 from a home at 57 Ledgelawn Ave. Lexington. Police said the red Volvo was later spotted in Worcester.
Right after the heist, witnesses said the suspects sped down Ash Street in a red Jeep, which was abandoned, blinkers and windshield wipers still on, the driver's door left open, in an empty driveway of 23 Ash St.
Waltham Police, aided by a scent-tracking dog, spent more than an hour searching near 23 Ash St. without success.
Michaud and another suspect had abandoned a car on Rte. 128 that the state police had been pursuing, then ran away, said Lexington Police Detective Lt. Joe O'Leary.
A Lexington Police officer found Michaud in the passenger seat of a Lexington man's car on North Street, O'Leary said.
``He had asked somebody for help, asked to use their phone. He looked banged up, and gave them a story (they believed),'' O'Leary said.
That man, 81-year-old Moses ``Max'' Khazam, ``just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time,'' he said.
The officer recognized Michaud from a description that had been broadcast, O'Leary said.
Michaud and his companion split up when they abandoned the car on Rte. 128, O'Leary said.
State police tactical officers also searched two homes in Lexington after they received information that the suspect who had yet to be apprehended may have been in them, Procopio said.
The suspect was not found at either home, he said.
``An extensive search, involving patrol officers, K-9 units and the air wing, was conducted of the surrounding area,'' Procopio said.
King said the suspect still at large is 5 foot 9 inches tall with a thin-to-medium build who was wearing a sweatshirt and ski mask.
Police don't believe he is still in Lexington, O'Leary said.
``We have plenty of patrols on tonight, going through neighborhoods, in spite of our assessment that he is no longer in the area, just to make sure. If a person looks out of place, call the police,'' O'Leary said.
``Unfortunately with bank robbery suspects, they often wear multiple layers of clothing and change,'' so police cannot say for certain what he is wearing, O'Leary said.
Nobody was hurt during the robbery, but a female bank employee was treated for chest pain due to anxiety over the ordeal, and taken to an area hospital, King said.
The Bank of America remained closed while police questioned bank employees following the robbery.
The bank was last robbed about 8 or 10 years ago, King said.
Waltham and Lexington police, as well as state police and the FBI, continue to investigate.
