WALTHAM - A Ugandan man who told police it is acceptable in his country to beat women who do not obey men, was arrested at his South Street home, after he punched, choked, bit, and threatened to kill his girlfriend, police said.

Richard Byakuleka, 40, argued with the alleged victim Sunday night about 8:42, and smashed a glass of beer over her head when she tried to barricade herself in a bedroom, Detective Sgt. Tim King said.

"She tried to grab the phone, and he told her he would kill her if she called 911," he said. "He grabbed her by the throat so she could not breathe, and smashed her head and upper body against the wall several times."

Byakuleka bit the alleged victim on her arm, breast and back, King said.

"He kept screaming he was going to kill her," he said. "He (told police) he is a Ugandan male and is entitled to a certain amount of respect from women."

Byakuleka, of 606 South St., Apt. B, was charged with two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery, assault with intent to murder, and intimidation of a witness, King said.

He said he does not know the extent of the alleged victim's injuries, but said she was treated by EMTs at the scene.

Byakuleka was ordered held without bail pending further arraignment today in Waltham District Court and a date for a hearing to determine if he is should be held pending trial will be set.
