This summer, Waltham teenagers entering sixth through 12th grade can read books and win prizes from the comfort of their home.
For the second summer, the Waltham Public Library's Teen Summer Reading Program will be conducted entirely online.
Laura Bernheim, head of the reference department at the library, started the program in 2002 when she was the young adult librarian. She said that on average, there have been 35 to 50 participants annually in the summer program.
"I think that in general for that age group," Bernheim said, "it's really important to let them know the library is their's as well,"
Once registered in the summer reading program, participants enter online what they've read - whether books, magazines or newspapers as well as audiobooks.
The more material a teen reads, the greater the chance of winning a prize at the end of the summer, Bernheim explained.
By creating the contest entirely online, she said, teens can participate without actually stepping foot in the library, which eliminates transportation issues or time conflicts for those interested.
The library also operates two blogs - the general library blog and "WPL Bytes," which is geared toward teens. The library also operates a Facebook page and a Twitter feed.
While the blogs have gotten few comments but many hits, the Facebook page and Twitter have become popular, Bernheim said.
The goals of the Teen Summer Reading Program and the library's presence online are twofold: In addition to encouraging teens to read over the summer, Bernheim said she hopes to get new young adults into the library.
"We do get a large crowd after school, but I'm sure there are a lot of people who aren't coming into the library," she said. "I hope getting online with get more teens involved."
