Register of Probate John Buonomo has been suspended without pay, per an order from the Supreme Judicial Court.
The order, released today (Aug. 20), states Buonomo will not be allowed to work at his elected position until the resolution of the criminal charges against him.
Buonomo was arrested earlier this month after he was reportedly caught on video pocketing money from copying machines in his office.
Buonomo remains on the ballot in this year’s Democratic Primary, and is currently unopposed. However, since the charges surfaced, a number of opponents have come forward indicating their willingness to serve. Among them are John Lamber, of Natick, whose mother was a register of probate; Paula Mattaliano of Arlington, and Sean O’Donovan, Ward 5 alderman and former School Committeeman in Somerville.
Buonomo himself was a Somerville alderman, serving at large during the Mike Capuano administration. He ran a bitter race against Capuano for mayor, and later campaigned for that same post, losing to Mayor Dorothy Kelly Gay.
Buonomo is now a resident of Newton.
