Abourzik new chief
Newton-Wellesley Hospital has appointed Dr. NICOLAS ABOURIZK as chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes. He earned his medical degree from the American University of Beirut and completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at the American University of Beirut Medical Center, where he also served as chief resident in internal medicine.
Dr. Abourizk, who now resides in Hopkinton, has broad research interests in endocrinology and has made important contributions in developing and studying efficient models of diabetes care, recognizing the heterogeneity of type 2 diabetes, and improving the treatment of inpatient diabetic patients. He has also made a number of clinical observations related to thyroid disease, pancreatic adenocarcinoma, and atypical diabetes in African-Americans.
Collins director Clinical Services
Lincoln resident KATHLEEN COLLINS, Ph.D., has been appointed the director of Clinical Services for WALTHAM-based Jewish Family & Children's Service's Community Housing for Adult Independence (CHAI) program. CHAI is a housing program that provides living support to adults with disabilities who seek to live independently in their own homes or in small group living situations.
Smiaroski on board
Maryknoll Lay Missioners (MKLM), a Catholic mission sending organization based in Maryknoll, N.Y., has appointed WALTHAM native MARY SUE SMIAROSKI
as secretary of its board of directors.
Smiaroski joined MKLM in 1985 and served as a missioner in Chile until 1992. During her tenure, she headed the Maryknoll Peace and Justice Commission of Chile. Her prior work experience includes positions with Oxfam Canada, and Oxfam Great Britain as policy advisor and program manager, as project officer and coordinator for the Gender Working Group and as evaluation assistant with Americas Council in Chile.
Stevens garners accolades

MARIA HIRSTI KVAM, 13, of NEWTON, a student at Bigelow Middle School, performed the role of Snail in the recent Boston Children's Theatre musical, ``A Year With Frog and Toad.'' It was her first appearance in a Boston Children's Theatre production.

Namukangula finishes basic training
Army Reserve Pvt. FRANK M. NAMUKANGULA has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.
He is the cousin of Norman Rutinwa of WALTHAM.
Martin in AmeriCorps
ELIZABETH MARTIN of NEWTON will graduate from AmeriCorps*NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) April 30, celebrating completion of more than 1,700 hours of community service.
Martin is one of 269 NCCC members who served at the Southeast Region Campus for 10 months. Members completed more than 260,000 total service hours while serving on 157 projects.
